as far as heat and food? If you hike (skid?) down to your truck can you get around a bit?
Hope the cold loses its grip there soon.
We're still getting fresh snow and probably need to plow the driveway again in the morning. We have a base of solid ice covered by 6 inches of fluffy snow. Our driveway is long and steep with a garage at the bottom. (It would make a great luge course!) For years we parked down there and hauled groceries up the hill on sleds... then two years ago we bought a Subaru, which gets us most anywhere.
never lost power here - it has perhaps melted a *few* inches .... BUT, i'm still snowbound - no vehicle (well except a 4WD backhoe) has made it up here (my truck made it *diwn* ! but, it's stuck there - or rather, it's *there* - and i'm here - and there's no gettin' it here ....... maybe a few more days of melting--ha, that's one thing they don't forcast: how fast it's going to melt!!
so yeah i guess i'm reveling - it's been quiet!! There *is* just a slight uneasy feeling knowing there's no quick way out (or a quick way to get ice cream!).
it's the *cost*, very willing to pay, of living here
like holt said, usually a few inches a few times a year -- but this is the biggest dump since '93 (that i recall) - only been snowbound twice in 20 years, and twice the road washed out!
Just talked to our daughter in Providence, RI and they got the storm as it moved north and a snow day today, but she says she could get out and around if they needed to.
We still have 3 or 4 inches on the ground and are getting light flurries at the moment so we should have a white Christmas. On the local news we heard Buffalo bemoaning their lack of snow. That situation will not stand for long, I'm sure.
Anyway all is well here. Work let me leave at 9am friday. Then paid time off for half of the rest of the day! 9-10 inches here. Unheard of here, usually like 3-4. No power loss in our home, some light flickers. Had beer fireworks neighbors soup spaghetti hot chocolate and snow friday evening! Roads starting to clear up. Had the inlaws here yesterday and they are leaving now to brave the roads to nashville tn. Went to the biltmore last night my first time. John cowan band was unfortunately canceled at the grey eagle last night I had a ticket for it. Gonna do a larry keel nye at the grey eagle most likely.
we get very few GREAT snowfalls in our area...either dangerous ice or not enough to make the world stop. Nothing more magical to me than to be able to stop and watch a great snow with the wonderment of a child. Everyone stay safe! Peace, BB

Supposedly 60,000 people in the Asheville area are without power because of the storm. Hope Holt and Ollie are OK and staying warm.
Sounds like you got blasted, solserenade! Must be your powerlines survived the heavy, wet blanket of snow you got. Almost seems like you are reveling in it - good for you! Are you taking lots of photos? Makes sense that the higher altitudes would end up with more snow.
So you dodged the worst of it this time, BB. Guess your Mom must be safe and has heat. Staying put IS an important safety strategy in all this. We have fleets of snowplows and stockpiles of sand and salt for the roads, but we still stay home when we have significant snowfall. It's just not worth getting stuck and stranded!
Raleigh was spared the usual sleet/freezing rain mix that we seem to always get...my Mom lives an hour southeast from Asheville and they had nine inches of snow...she will be staying put for a while...I hope! Peace, BB

hey y'all
i'm an hour NE of Holt - i don't know what they got - we got a *solid*, heavy, wet, 15" .... it is Beautiful!!! so wet that it stuck to the trees like mad, but not in an icy way - just THICK like frosting! Really nice.
if it was fluffy snow it would be 2 - 3 ft., that's how it feels.
I think about as far East as maybe Charlotte did they get *a little* -- but generally, toward the coast is warmer, or for some reason less likely to get snow (plus there's no mtns. there.)
I'm no fan of snow in general, or extreme cold, but over 63 inches of rain so far this year is a bit much! I can't complain I guess - we didn't flood or anything, but some people down here did this last weekend when we got something like 7 inches in a few hours. It was ridiculous.
I am 20 minutes outside of downtown Toronto, we have snow on the ground, not much but it is COLD. You got snow BB? I heard there was some storm down that way, icy roads etc. I would rather have the rain Nathan
I heard that ominous weather forecast, too, BB and wondered how you and Holt would fare in terms of the cold and snow. Are you more likely to get hit with this storm because you are closer to the coast?
As for us, snow is not unusual here in western NY this time of year. We have several inches on the ground, but aren't necessarily supposed to feel the effects of this particular storm. The local ski areas have taken advantage of the cold weather here and are making snow. They are definitely thrilled. Us, not so much...

still socked-in here ... total icy, rock-hard snow, and frigid. it is NOT USUAL. longest snow since '93 probably.
for the 5 inches already on the ground! About normal for us in WNY, I guess.
Don't imagine that dustings of snow are your usual January experience, though, are they?
Getting a light dusting right now.

SNOW PARTY was enjoyed!
Glad the power stayed on. Stay safe! Peace, BB.

In the 50s, sunny, great weather to go hang out by the Dome!
First sun we have seen in a long time. This month has already been the wettest month in recorded history here.
I hope the snow doesn't cause you too many problems!
