Tuning

Tuning

Can you help us with slide tuning? We are experimenting with different tuning. What keys does Derek tune his SG in? It seems like he never has to tune his guitar while he's on stage.

for all that I have seen/heard...open G is usually "capoed" at the 5th fret for Down in the Flood...Peace, BB

I still dunno what open tuning Derek Uses, but it;s nice to read all te replies to this.
So I've been practising with Open C, D, A and G - tuning and it's really cool to find out these tunings and not always tune it standard.
I've picked up slide recently and works already nice in Open tuning (not as great as Derek ofcourse, but Iam trying my best, LOL)

So yeah open tuning is really great, I also like the lower tuning, beacuse it makes my guitar sound much nicer!!!!
normally in standard tuning I always use D# instead of E, feels way better for me.

is there a secret to getting the dark, almost bali type of sound? i have to find it and force it, so i figured it was a tuning issue. i can get the sound i want, but was wondering if there is a certain tuning to look into?? any help or suggestions would be the tits at this point... i've hit a wall by myself, usually i just go some other way when i hit the wall but, i really dig the dark mystic sound i get lost in it but its just not as natural as the uplifting blues sound.

you wrote <<< I am learning to play from peter vogl on you tube.I have a long way to catch up to you.I dont think i will ever perform but i do play at my bar in my garage. >>>

Haha ! Hey, playin' is playin' ... bar is *in* your garage - makes set-up/tear-down real quick I guess, lol. ... and a short walk to 'the hotel' haha

<<< tuning is easy. picking[finger ]is difficult. slide for me is even more difficult. tune the open g to open e and pluck away while moving your slide.can you do this? I just thought of it myself. the who song; im in tune, right in tune, im in tune, right in tune right in on you. something like that. tune fun. >>>

yeah man, GREAT song! ... had *never* thought of playing it on guitar though, for some reason (??) - especially slide!

BUT - like you said - it is fun, man.

derek, did you ever try to tune your open e to open a.double up the a or the other way a to open e.i have a cheap acoustic sigma guitar that i bought on sunset blvd when i went to see the dead out in california. It buzzes and sounds like crap.I have now procrastinated myself to the point where i cant buy a new guitar.I tune my guitar using you tube.i key in gutar tuner and all sorts of tuning comes on .clasical guitars, electric, acoustic.i just match it up or i use a pitchfork in a.I am learning to play from peter vogl on you tube.I have a long way to catch up to you.I dont think i will ever perform but i do play at my bar in my garage.tuning is easy.picking[finger ]is difficult.slide for me is even more difficult.tune the open g to open e and pluck away while moving your slide.can you do this?I just thought of it myself..the who song; im in tune, right in tune,im in tune ,right in tune right in on you.something like that.tune fun.

Haha, thanks Mr. T!

Derek has definitely become comfortable using a capo to change his tuning, aswell as we have been using an open D tuning for some things recently including "Down in the Flood"....
