Plexi panels used (Sound isolation)
I just saw them use plexi panels infront of their insturments for the first time on 2/14/09. I just saw them in late november and they did not have them then. Is this something they started abroad or during the NYE run?
All members but Kofi and Todd I believe had plexi panels IIRC. Derek's I presume are used so that his guitar does not bleed into others' mics because the amps are loud and the vocal mics are points backward towards the amps.
The thing that puzzles me is though, is Count's plexi to keep the rest of the noise out of his area? (the opposite of what Derek's is doing) I would guess his percussion instuments are the lowest in volume so Bobby is trying to keep the other instruments out of Count's mix especially when he is using the hand held rattles, beads, etc?
I have seen them close to 30 times in the last 8 years or so, this was the first show I saw the plexi panels or a light show.... Things are always changing and change is always good!
Bobby really has this band's sound nailed down though I know he is always looking to improve it!

Bobby,
Thanks for the reply! That is interesting that you have carried Derek's piece around for years..... Before this show I have never seen it, and I pay attention to details like that as a fellow gear-head and techie.
Makes complete sense that Derek's rig might need one depending on the venue to protect the upfront audience from an overloaded guitar sound though. There have been a few shows in the past where Kofi in particular was a little hard to hear being upfront but you have to desgin for the middle of the audience.... There is no such thing as a perfect distribtution but damn you don't get close!
Keep up the good work!

Ok, So this was one specific show where the venue was particularly cavernous and the sheer volume of the stage was winning in a "sound-fight" against the PA system. In order to cut down on the stage volume we put up 4ft high by 2ft wide plexi-glass panels hinged together (2 pieces for each) on the front corners of the drum kit and also one to To the Upstage Right Side of the percussion rig to block the other, louder instruments out of the percussion Mics.
Now, The one in front of Derek's rig we carry with us. We have been using this for years, depending on the venue. Generally, we first take the crowd into mind and decide whether it is necessary to put something between the crowd and the amp, Second we consider if the room itself can acoustically handle this fairly loud amp's blistering tone bouncing off of every surface, if the answer is no because of too many hard surfaces, or a long decay time or whatnot; we put the plexi up.
It all depends....
But i Do remember that Show.
