Marshall Class 5

Marshall Class 5

Any of you good folk own, or have tried out, the Marshall Class 5 (5 watt amp)?

Just looking for opinions as i already have Marshall's 1974x which is 18 watts but looking for something lower in the wattage range for bedroom practice.

Ritchie, I heard that these were great low volume amps..I .finally got my '67 DR back after a total check-up and new speaker installation...waiting on the Ultimate Attenuator at this time...hope all is well. Peace, BB

BB, just bought myself a Vox ac4tv. The fact that i could drop it down to 1/4 watt sold it for me. Nice sound at such a low volume for playing along to backing tracks

Ritchie,..with a Marshall Major you are not just killing DragonFlies..you are herding cattle!! Smiling the Keeley boosts are really great. I am not a distortion fan, but I like a really pushed clean tone with natural compression and harmonics like all great guitarists get with a guitar, an amp, and a cord...Smiling

I use my Volume knob for boosting and just have to drive those tubes! No point otherwise Smiling How would you compare the Keeley boost to the other boost pedals you mentioned?

Good luck with the house hunting! I can only tell you from someone who lives in the heart of the countryside how joyful it is to crank up a Marshall Major (no attenuator) in the back garden and drive those power tubes. I think i must have killed over 200 DragonFiles and a swarm of wasps with the air that was driven from the speaker Smiling My (only) neighbours are my sister and a Guitar student of mine so no complaints there!

it ain't gonna be the same at low levels with either a MV or an attenuator. The UA is pricey but very good..the best that I have tried..and I have tried them all. I still have to leave the speaker breakup out of the equation which is a large part of the signal chain...but at least I can get the power tubes cooking and for me that's where the harmonic overtone magic and sustain begins to happen. The only other option is a hitting the front end with a great OD pedal...but then you're hearing the pedal and not the amp...it's all a compromise unless you can crank it and just use your volume knob to control gain. The Klon, Xotic BB preamp, and the Xotic IP boost are all really good clean boost options. Some of these pedals act a s a sort of MV...but any way that you cut it, you're not gonna get what your ears crave unless you are running an amp hot. (you probably know all this). I've been in a condo for seven years and we are looking for a small house now just so I can crank our stereo and my amp. Peace, BB

Thanks for the link. I'm checking out as many reviews as i can. I don't live near a Marshall Dealer so reviews are what i rely on. Yeah, 5 watts may be too loud but i got the loan of a Vox ac4tv which has a max of 4 watts and it's not too loud when i crank up the backing tracks, but the Marshall could be a lot different (and it unfortunately doesn't have a master volume)

Nice amp the 67 Deluxe reverb but do you find the Attenuator sucking a lot of the nice tones? I use an Attenuator with my 100 Watt Marshall Super Lead and i find the Attenuator diminishes the quality of sound. I'm using a TCH so you're ultimate could be better.

there has been ongoing threads on the Les Paul Forum that you might want to check out under teh "amp" section

Five watts might be too loud for bedroom use.. I can't remember if it has a master volume or not. I haven't been able to purchase a great amp since I had to sell all in 2008. Finally decided to just get a 67 Deluxe Reverb and order an Ultimate Attenuator for quieter volume levels.
Let me know if you get to check one out! They seem quite popular and mods are already being posted:) Peace, BB
