School Kids Records has been a fixture on the Raleigh scene for 20+ years and is the last remaining independent music store in Raleigh. (and the last one in the School Kids’ chain of stores)

They moved from the Kinko’s building on Hillsborough Street the first of this year to a store adjacent to Sadlacks Heroes to cut lease expenses, only to have the 1 year+ construction project begin on Hillsborough Street. Besides there being NO parking on Hillsborough St., as it is now only two lanes, there are concrete barriers and fencing which makes it almost impossible to walk from the campus of N.C. State University over to the North side of the street. And, to make matters worse, once construction is completed on the South side of the street, it will then move over to directly in front of them. Their business has already declined about 70% since construction began, and, at this rate I doubt the viability of their survival over the coming year.

Sure it is a pain to park in one of three spaces in front of their store, but they offer great service, a cool place to browse through CDs and LPs, and if they don’t have what you’re looking for they will get it for you quickly.

If you still purchase CDs or Vinyl, and are passing through Raleigh, I would ask that you make an effort to purchase from them in the year ahead. Every college or university needs a music store that’s right across the street!
