Equipment Derek Plays
Greetings Everyone,
Can someone fill me in on the type of guitar and such Derek plays? I have appreciated music all my life, and now our son is beginning to play (I do not play, I just appreciate). Now, I know a Strat, a Telecaster, a Gibson LP, but can someone tell me what Derek plays?
Thanks in advance - OE
Oh, Love Susan T. also - she's got so much soul! We will be seeing/hearing Derek and his band for the first time - Feb. 21 in Memphis. I may take our son three days later up in St. Louis, we shall see. He is 13 and it would be his first concert!

Hi.
Is everywhere possible to buy Gibson SG '61 Reissue, the same one as yours? With that silver plate in front.
Thanks for help!
Derek is my idol! I love him!
The Original Sewell also gets my vote as the amp in the video has 4 knobs, and that is the only model of PRS/Sewell that only has 4 knobs

well in the PRS video Derek talks about the simplicity of turning just a few knobs..and that would point to the original Sewell design.however they make "the Dallas" which is a 6L6 powered amp, with reverb, and that configuration sounds pretty much like DT's '65 Super Reverb, but with a master volume which would allow more gain to be dialed in, and therefore more 'cut' in the ABB mix, while still allowing for the glassy clean tones that he is known for.?? I've got a dealer asking the question at this time. interesting how in the youtube vid the PRS cab looks about the same size as the 4x10 Super, but with the amp head sitting on top... Thanks for your help!

It looks like, from the video, that the amp head has the most letters.... so possibly the "Original Sewell"??? I want to try one!
In a PRS video Derek states that the PRS amp that he has been using with the ABB is "all over " the new record. Does anyone know which of the three PRS amp heads Derek is using? Thanks! BB

so i have seen him play the prs. as i was in raleigh for abb thispast october. been to many places/concerts since then to remember. thanks for the reminder!
that makes 4 abb guitarists who've played prs onstage if im not mistaken. dickey, warren, jimmy, and derek.
Derek played one song with the ABB in Raleigh in 2008 with a PRS McCarty, and broke out his vintage '59 Les Paul "Burst" for "One Way Out". He also played the 'burst for "Freddie's Dead" in Roanoke with the DTB as an encore in October 2008. (Pics of it are on on this site sitting on a stand for the Friday, 11/28/08 show in Charlotte..it never made it out for the Saturday show) He also has a vintage '61 LP/SG that he got in 2007 (played it at the Carolina Theatre in Durham), to go along with his Historic re-issue SG. From the looks of his studio he has acquired quite a vintage Fender amp collection, along with the various Danos, Silvertone guitars, etc, and other small low watt vintage amps....

Thanks to all of you for the replies. Looking forward to Derek and his band Jan 21. My only wish is for it to be an all instrumental concert, or to have Susan T. sing. But alas, she will be in Oregon.

as stated above primarily the sg. but ive seen(in person) him play his signature washburn, several sg's of course, a D'Angelico only once(these are made by a relative of HTN & Mule producer Michael Barbiero), and a les paul, and also i believe those he uses for sit down are danelectros.
i think someone somewhere said hes played a PRS live onstage and i think ive seen a photo of him on one but ive never seen him play it/one while i was in the audience.
Equipment and style
Trucks avoids processing and effects, preferring to get the purest tone possible by connecting his guitar (Gibson SG custom 1962 reissue) directly to his amplifier, a 1965 Fender Super Reverb loaded with four Pyle Driver MH1020 speakers. He modifies his tone with the controls on the guitar. In early 2006, an equipment trailer with Trucks' gear was stolen. Some of the gear was recovered from a field outside Atlanta, including the 1965 Fender Super Reverb (an amplifier he's been playing with since he was a young boy), a 1968 Super Reverb (one of the backup amps), a Hammond B-3, two Leslie rotating speaker cabinets, a Höhner E-7 Clavinet, and a few other minor items.[17] He said, fortunately, nobody was home at the time, he "was away gigging with the Allmans", so nobody was hurt.
Trucks regularly plays without a plectrum, or "pick". He generally plucks or strums (together or independently) with his thumb as well as his index, middle, and ring fingers. Electric guitarists using this method are rare: most prefer to use a pick. Howlin' Wolf's supporting guitarist Hubert Sumlin, Jeff Beck and Albert Lee are among the notable exceptions who play without a pick. He uses custom gauge DR nickel-wound strings on both his SG and resonator guitars: .011, .014, .017, .026, .036, and .046. Most of his guitars are tuned to open E . Derek has used Fender Super reverbs in the past, but as of September 30, 2008, was not doing so when he played Merriweather Post Pavillion. In addition he had several new custom made amps (believed to be new Ceaser Diaz amps).
He plays a variety of guitars, but his primary guitar is a red Gibson SG. If you're considering buying one of those for your 13-year old, is there a chance you are looking to adopt a middle-aged man from WA?
