Derek's setup on the SG?
I have always wondered how Derek's SG is setup. I have what my local guitar tech calls or "standard" slide setup for my SG which makes it dam near impossible to play non slide lines and chords. Of course if I lower the strings down then I start fretting out, especially when playing below the 5th fret. There must be a sweet spot I havent found yet.
Forgive me if this has been asked before (probably by half the slide players on earth) but I have been unable to find any info at all on Derek's setup.

hey folks, CoolPop here. Does anyone know of a site where Derek's tech actually goes over his actual setup on youtube (like Brian does with Warrens guitars)? You guys be on the lookout for "Johnnyboy" Custom Guitars. Our site will be up in a few weeks... we do custom "portraiture" art (we've NEVER "painted" a guitar) work plus custom built guitars. wish us luck!
give a really nice fat tone for slide...but I can't bend .11s so I've got .10s set up a little higher than normal on my SG tuned to open E. I can't ever decide on whether to have it set up for just slide because it's such a great guitar! I'm trying to learn slide in regular tuning, but I have always played in open E, and actually prefer the open E bottleneck overtones. I've actually gone to .09s on my Les Paul for the first time since 1972 with a REALLY low slinky set up....the tone is thinner, bends are easier, and it REALLY makes you get your right hand into the game. It's all good! Peace, BB

Thats interesting I had no idea Duane used such light stringsfor slide work. I am using 11s myself. The guy who set this guitar up recomended not using anything heavier on an SG which suited me fine as I had been using 11s anyway for the last 18 years or so.
Hmm I might set up one of my beater guitars with lighter strings and see what happens. Could be good training for my slide hand, make me pay attention to how much pressure im using.
it seems that I have read that he uses .11 gauge strings, and they would probably be a little higher set-up than normal due to the gauge itself. DT has some serious "paws" and great finger strength. Duane use to use .09-.10 gauge strings and tune his Les Paul to both regular and open "E" tunings with the same set up, so I would image that DT has found the happy medium for playing both lead and slide with the same set-up. Duane's touch was EXTREMELY light and his ability to control his slide playing with such a slinky set-up undoubtedly can be attributed to the fact that he was left-handed...so he had much more control than us mere right-handed mortals! Peace, BB
