Derek's guitar sources

Be sure to check out today's posting from Ed Seelig in the comments on the News notice about Derek and Susan's Santa Cruz appearance. It's an amazing recounting of how Ed procured particular guitars for Johnny Winter and Derek Trucks. A great read!

Thanks BB. No, actually this guy Stafford McCartney, and his time in the Big House, may have pre-dated Kirk & Kirsten. Reading about the BH on the ABB site I was puzzled about the time line considering Stafford told me that when they bought the house it was in pretty bad shape. He was a little vague about whether or not he was a "Brothers" fan, but did mention later selling it to someone who had something to do with the museum. I'll "ring" him up today and get the real scoop and see if he has any ephemera from the period he and his wife lived there.

I was replying to Nathan's post above yours, our replies were posted at the same time. Smiling Your vendor must have been Kirk West, who with his wife, Kirsten has owned the Big House and all the memorabilia for a number of years. They wanted a large sum for the house with the memorabilia, and I'm glad that the Foundation was formed to keep it all intact. Peace, BB

Anyday and BB--Thanks for the thread. I didn't realize it until I re-read the comment that Duane was gone in such a short time after the NOLA Warehouse gig of September 16, 1971. I was more than likely going through the Panama Canal or cruising up the West Coast at the time. Funny thing, about time, places, and stuff (all ephemera I suppose.)

My sister reminded me that I had kept a ticket to the concert that particular night, I don't remember. She also said that she has ephemera ( learned a new word in this thread, btw) from the "Winter's End" concert. She tells me that it is about 6 boxes deep, somewhere, and it will take us two hours to dig it out. Well, I'm shovel ready as that particular concert was the first time that I had seen the abb and Johnny Winter at the same gig. Apparently she and the other "Quicksilver Girls" became acquainted with the musicians, groupies in their own way I suppose, especially since I knew the other two of the trio.

I turned my sister on to my albums, just prior to my hitchhiking to San Francisco (I never made it and made the best right turn of my life.) It was fortunate because I asked for the record collection back 20 years later--and she kindly returned them to me. It is true that the past can only be preserved by the future; with our ephemera we'll leave artifacts for a new generation to ponder. This is what I find so appealing about Derek and Susan. I tell the younger generation that they, Derek and Susan, are two of the greatest musicians of their generation; slow down and pay attention, enjoy the journey, something great is happening here.

Interesting that last year, just prior to driving up to Wanee, a vendor that I was buying some building material from, mentioned that he and his wife had bought "The Big House" at a foreclosure and then later sold it to the Big House Foundation. I haven't had the opportunity to ask him about any ephemera that may have survived, but will do so prior to Wanee.

I'm a newbie here, of course, and find that a lot of good time memories are resurfacing--most come with a slight patina, a setting sun, only to arise again when jarred awake by a slide or lead guitar. These times are indeed special--Thank you Derek, thank you Susan, thank you Warren and Greg, thank you all for all the good sounds you made....

One of these days, I'm going to sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I've known
And I'm gonna try
And thank them all
for the good times together.
Though so apart we've grown.

Neil Young pretty well sums it up. Our time is finite here, a composite of our life's experiences make us who we are today. I never want to get in such a hurry to get somewhere that I miss all the adventure in between.

Little do you know, but a legend lurks among us. Brother Bill is one of the foremost collectors you or I have ever had the pleasure of knowing! Trust me!

stuff...but really cool stuff Smiling Mainly because the ephemera was from their daily lives on the road and basically passed through the band members' and roadies' hands....and they told a story.

of the scope of your Duane connections. I know that paper documents and original photos are considered to be ephemera, but the emotional impact of the items you mentioned is chillingly real and surely lasting.

I'll create a new thread in Off Topic dealing with inserting "in-line" hyper-links.

It was in the Crossroads 2010 thread. Check your messages before you re-do all that work.

Seems like quite a few fans like to share links here but, like me, don't really know how to post hyperlinks. It would probably be very helpful to have those explicit directions here in Off Topic.

Thanks for sharing those, 41Truck!

Anyday wrote "(Gotta practice creating hyperlinks! Sorry...)"

Anyday and Brother Bill--Yes, Anyday I know what you mean. Was it you who asked me how to create inline-links? Anyhow, don't feel bad as I posted a response to the What are you listening to other than the dtb question in the Off Topic thread and after uploading it found that one of the links was faulty (I thought that I had checked them all prior to saving.) I should have just replied with a one liner correction but wasn't thinking that my editing would create a double post. I would be nice to allow the user to edit or delete a post after submitting it, if there hasn't been any replies it.

I don't know remember where I put that response to the question of "How do you create the html in-line links? Anyway Anyday, I'll create a new topic with a "step by step" guide as to how I generally to create one and perhaps put it here in the Off Topic. Do you think that would help?

Please forgive me as I am not trying to hi-jack this thread.

The player sounds more influenced by DT than Duane although it's all from the same source Smiling Great tone and playing. I have owned many of the original pics that were used for this tribute and it was nice to see them again (like old friends) in the slideshow. Thanks! Peace, BB

(Gotta practice creating hyperlinks! Sorry...)

I use to own a lot of paper docs from that era of the ABB, and I remember running across the receipt given to Red Dog from the city for picking up Duane's wrecked bike, and one for the purchase of Hammond cables dated the day of the funeral so that Gregg could play at his brother's funeral...sent shivers up my spine...
I can't picture Duane playing a Firebird any more than I can Derek...but Duane played lots of different guitars before he settled on the Les Paul...if he was still alive he would probably be playing a big old jazz guitar in a small club, or reinventing bluegrass on slide mandolin Smiling

about his contacts with Brother Duane was so moving, BB. Sorry, I meant to give you a heads up about it beforehand because it was such a shocking confluence of events that he related. It was like a punch in the gut to me ... can't imagine how you must've felt reading it!

for posting this as I would have missed it under the comments for the Santa Cruz announcement! Smiling
