The Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band
I am looking forward to the Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band (ttb?). This will be a fun little trip.
We may see them in places like “The View” or sitting down w/Larry King. They may talk intimately about the music they play and their family. They also will play shows with new originals (I think the real reason for this is to use the shed they built in the yard ) and learn to see where they can go together as musicians.
I am all for it.
This is going to expose the mainstream to some quality music and living. I guess we’re ready to share now.
This band will spawn creativity. There will be more allowances of failure. If you see a dTb show, you may not see a mistake in the whole set. It is startling. That is Derek left alone. He feels very responsible for what is going on when his name is on the ticket (by itself). He does not want you leaving the show going, “Did you see Derek miss that note or did you see Mike miss that verse?” Derek does not want to afford you that opportunity. He’d rather sacrifice a little on the exploration for the perfection. Much appreciated.
However, get him around Jimmy and he detunes and starts asking for the mic. Why? Because, Jimmy knows him inside and out and he respects Jimmy on the same instrument he plays. There is no need to impress. Jimmy knows the deal.
Enter Susan Tedeschi. Enough said.
Can’t wait!

when we came out of the Durham show we all felt like we had been to a great blues/jazz music revival. Joyous and uplifting. And it's no secret that DT's slide style is largely based upon female gospel singers' phrasing. Just like the early ABB, they play with great dynamics...which is almost non-existent outside of jazz or classical music. That's one reason that I have never really viewed DT as a great guitarist...but as a great musician who just happens to play guitar. Peace, BB

They can take any geat song and play it so many different ways within their background of styles. Brother is right that improvisation makes the range of possiblity open to them no matter the newness of the music. The fact that Mike has said he considers their music "pre blues" would indicate its ability to cross genres into the roots of blues, rock, or jazz. To me, I hear it mostly due to a gospel element in their work, it's what enables them to tie all these styles together and make new recipies out of every song(a major part of their new name as well).
That's what really gave blues its essence. Even southern rock has those elements in its music, universal beat and harmonies.

Spent some time this past weekend really pondering your post from Friday, BB. I appreciate your kind words AND the profound wisdom in your observations regarding circumstances and attitudes.
As you point out so well, our circumstances may not be what we had hoped for, but daily we choose what our attitude will be.
When I consider how blessed we are with gifted folks willing to take the many risks and make the sacrifices necessary to share their music with the world, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Sharing one's music is one of the most selfless gifts anyone can bestow upon the world. Indeed, BB.

If they were done then don't you think that not only their "availability" but also their name would be completely removed from the entourage talent website? Their name is still up there so entourage is most likely still on the payroll of dtb cause I doubt they advertise for free. Also offer someone enough money and they'll be back and play in afghanistan
. Look at the Dead for example the guarantees that Live Nation offered them was to good to pass up so they played mostly crappy indoor arenas almost the entire tour.
Btw I sent an email re: smilefest to your work addy.
in my world one great note will trump a million meaningless words all day every day. Peace, BB

HP--agree with most points..who knows if they will come back or not? I think Scrap will be opening for GA in Richmond and I am pretty excited about that show.....I know that you're a lyrics/song guy, and for my money a great song works in ANY genre...."If the Song Ain't Strong, It Don't Belong"
I use to be a lyrics/singer-songwriter fan (for MANY YEARS) but having been through Bob, Joni, Neil, Jackson, Van, JT, and bands such as the Beatles , Stones, Zep et al over the years...as well as exposed to a lot of classic jazz..I really can't take much more of either current four chord artists....or bands that just jam with no melodic content.... in my old age I certainly am looking for more than the commercial music industry offers...not saying that new artists/songwriters aren't good..but most just don't do it for me. Turn me on to some GREAT ones and I will certainly give them a listen. So, now I am drawn more to roots music/blues. Authenticity (ie originality) is what I am into...whether it's old and something undiscovered by me or new...maybe I set the bar too high in the OTHER direction...but I'm not willing to lower it for my $$ either. Peace, BB.

Demand goes up in absence. When people can't have what they want they just want it even more. They won't not capitalize on that, makes bad business sense. Ex: Widespread Panic, Phish, GD, etc all have come back as they were all better together than apart. SCI will be back.
Plus there is nothing to gain by saying "we'll be back in "x" amount of time", as most people who like the dtb and live improvisational music and who might not necessarily like songs and songwriting would just wait it out until the dtb do play live again and then not go to buy tickets to this new circus in town (It'd be shooting themselves in the foot by giving a time frame). An attraction that may have something new to offer or may not and then end up like another Frogwings, etc.
You know with papers but not offering any more love(new material) than the next animal(dtb, frogwings, etc).
Hey, hopefully I am completely wrong, and they'll take advantage of Mikes songwriting skills (hell he had *3* scrap albums out in the same time frame that dtb released *one* and he was quoted as saying that they wanted to make another this year and had the material to do it too) and also Kofi's songwriting something they should have done much more often with dtb but didn't for some really odd reason(s). also Susan's and Doyle's songwriting too should be taken advantage of.
Me? I'm taking a wait and see approach with the new band and will sooner reward *creativity* with my $ than something that is a mostly a *touring entity*.
In the 4 shows I went to in 2008-2009 by dtb I heard live almost everything off of already free. There are only 12 notes in western music. Only so much you can do with that. However there are millions of words that can be strung together in the english language to form lyrics and then turn them into songs . . .
I don't think the former lineup will return..could be wrong....hopefully I will be. New material or not....the show I heard by the DTB in Durham was pretty explosive and adventurous, and I will have to work really hard in 2010 to find any band in any genre that might even come close to it. And I LIVE for live improvisational music...not just new songs.

But there's no void left by dtb abb or even dbgs gone as they weren't growing and this "supergroup" may wind up like another blind faith lots of pedigree, minimal original material.
We'll see.
I *may* buy an album by this new band if it has a majority if not *ALL* original material on it but I doubt I will go out of my way to see them live unless they are in a decent venue in my backyard.
Guess we probably had nothing to do with Chris's posts being blocked, BB. One day I just went berserk on the spammers and marked probably a hundred offensive posts - I might've made an error myself during that process, but I don't think that any of us reporting offensive posts necessarily would've triggered a block on his account.
my eyes are aged and I could have accidentally hit the wrong button...won't be the first time or the last. BUT, I was VERY careful when I was clicking the "offensive button" NOT to make a mistake. And, I certainly doesn't seem to have actually blocked any poster that I have reported as "offensive" to date, so even if I had accidentally clicked Chris' post it shouldn't have mattered. Peace, BB

There was no spam connected with your posts. Someone had to have goofed up blocking your original account.
In the Songs Suggestions... thread there were two very blatant spams below one of your posts. Could someone have clicked on the incorrect "report as offensive" block wanting to report the spams and unintentionally reporting your post? But anyone could read your post and know it wasn't spam. Also, as BB noted, nothing that we are aware of has happened to the actual spammers.
Hope this will eventually be made right, Chris.
no spam from you Chris...have no clue why you were blocked...wasn't aware that anyone actually monitored this site at all!
I DID report as offensive some of the TRUE SPAM hoping someone WOULD do something...doesn't appear that the TRUE SPAM has been blocked at all!!
Nathan, yeah, Rico's comments make me feel that the DTB as we have known them are on more than a one year hiatus. I am sad if this is the case but look forward to whatever Derek and Susan offer as I know it will be fun and great! If the "supergroup" hits a home run...then they can play larger venues together, and not have to be on the road as much as they have been in the past. With kids it's a tough gig no matter how you slice it. There will be a tremendous void left by the absence of the ABB and Dickey Betts and Great Southern, as well as the DTB....Peace, BB

I didn't get any spam from you. Weird that you'd be blocked. I hope they get all this straightened out.
About Rico - it was so weird seeing him look so mopey after the Mobile show. When he was giving out setlists he looked genuinely depressed. I remember thinking that maybe he was just bummed about 16 years coming to an end.
You feel this vibe from Yonrico that carries a sense or uncertainty. The fantastic aspect of this is the tremendous sense of urgency the entrie band has in taking its message to so many loyal fans. Look back at what was done with their music with that in mind, and it makes the highs a lot higher, and the lows are real blues. (/More High?)
PS- I'm blocked from comments(my reg.user name is listed below), did some spam tag along on my other posts?

your last paragraph was beautiful! We all hope and pray for what we want in this life, but thankfulness and gratitude should be the tone of each day....as the sharing of one's music is the most selfless gift anyone can bestow on this world.

I just read your post this morning BB and, as you said, there is a strange mixture of finality/uncertainty/hope/fear in Yonrico's musings. Guess it WOULD seem odd to have a 16 year investment, joy about a Grammy nomination and at the same time be coping with the prospect of possibly having played your final gig together as dTb.
Sounds like a rollercoaster of emotions and circumstances Yonrico is experiencing - professionally, personally, financially, emotionally... His request for prayer is particularly touching. As a believer I know that Yonrico has a perspective influenced strongly by his faith. I do pray and hope for a positive outcome for all concerned. There seems to be such a bittersweet undercurrent in the human condition with which we can all identify.
am I the ONLY one getting mixed messages from Rico's Facebook posts??
today:
Yonrico Scott is dreaming because today is the last day of the DEREK TRUCKS BAND, 16 years now we are taking a year (or more ) Hiatus. We are in Albany at the Egg we have played here so many time I know the people at the Hotel ... Pray for us I will 4 u ♥ The first Gig after is Chriskwanukkah in Decatur-Oakhurt with Ike Grant & Charles for a great cause Come see me .....
Thanks!

I am totally with you on this BB. You said it all in the above post!
is not reality. I do not expect anything from an artist other than a good sound mix, and an inspired performance. The journey is theirs and they are sharing but a fleeting gift that I greatly appreciate. Peace, BB

It is how you view the art, subjectively.
How you hear them, in this instance.
If you listen with a goal in mind, or the times he plays that way, maybe you hear that in terms of ambitions, success, or failure, in what they wish to convey.
Sometimes it is for its own sake. Susan calls it "riding a wave" so it really carries past a point.
They are continually evolving and growing to share their experience in music with all of us. Their 'failure' in the expression of music is a resounding success, by all comparison. It would be like crumpled music papers from the studio floor of Beethoven. It may miss their (and fans)'standards of expectation, but it's still a symphony to many listeners.
The path is the goal, the note is the song, the tour is an experience.
